The only difference between Bacteriostatic Water and sterile water for injection is the preservative. Sterile water contains no benzyl alcohol, no antimicrobial agent and no added buffer. Once the seal is broken on a sterile water vial, nothing prevents microbial growth, so it is classified as a single-use product and must be discarded after one withdrawal.

Bacteriostatic Water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which provides ongoing protection against microbial contamination during repeated vial access. This multi-use capability is what makes it the standard choice for research settings where multiple reconstitution sessions are carried out from a single vial over days or weeks. How to Use BAC Water for Reconstitution?

• Swab the rubber stopper of the Bacteriostatic Water vial with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Allow it to air dry completely before piercing.

• Swab the stopper of the lyophilised compound vial with alcohol. Inject the water slowly down the vial’s inner glass wall, not directly onto the powder.
• Gently swirl until the powder fully dissolves. Never shake or vortex. The solution should be clear and free of visible particles before use.
• Date the Bacteriostatic Water vial at first puncture. Store it at room temperature and discard after 28 days, regardless of how much solution remains.

Storage and Handling

Store unopened vials at controlled room temperature (20 to 25 degrees Celsius), protected from direct light. Do not freeze Bacteriostatic Water. Freezing provides no stability benefit and can stress the vial closure, compromising the seal the preservative depends on.
